The very beginning....

Last year around this time I began preparing for college and researching what the preppy style was all about. I knew my school is known for being a haven for prep fashion but I didn't exactly understand all of what is commonly thought of as being preppy. For the very first true blog-post on this blog it felt needed to first talk about what exactly preppy is.

Urban Dictionary "preppy":  A true preppy is someone who:
Wears, but is not limited to, Polo, Lilly, Brooks Brothers, Lacoste, LL Bean (ie duck boots), ribbon belts, prints (ie cords with embroidered whales, palm trees, etc), sweaters tied around the neck, collar always popped, looks neat and put together. Hair ribbons or ribbon headbands, pearls, and other classic jewelry pull the look together. Preppies are partial to monogrammed and engraved items (ie tote bags, oxford shirts, jewelry, money clips, etc). Colors are always brite (favorites include pink and lime green). Preppies may not always match EXACTLY but they are always coordinated. Hats are worn (ie polo player, Lacoste, Brooks Brothers), but they are unique- not designs you would see in the mainstream and the "mall".They are confident and unafraid to express their own styles and be daring in their fashions. Preppies vacation on Nantucket, Martha's Vineyard, Delray Beach, and on the coast of Maine. T It is a common misconception that preppies are snobs. Many people view them as unapproachable, and as a result mislabel them. Preppies are not as rich as people may think they are, but they are often well off. They buy into classics rather than trends, and don't change their lifestyles with fads.
Preppies tend to have bizarre connections with other preppies they meet, always finding mutual friends/ family and people that run in the same circle.

Wikipedia "preppy": Preppy, preppie, or prep (all abbreviations of the word preparatory) refers to a modern, widespread United States clique, often considered a subculture. Preppy is both an American adjective and an American noun, while prep is only an American noun, traditionally used in relation to Northeastern private university-preparatory schools and denotes a person seen as characteristic of an attendee of these schools.[1] Although considered slang, the noun prep has become a colloquialism in the United States and has largely replaced the noun preppy. Characteristics of preps include a particular subcultural speech, vocabulary, accent, dress, mannerisms, and etiquette reflecting Northeastern, upper-class families in the United States.

So what do I think prep is? A lifestyle just as much as it is a fashion. Being preppy is more than just putting on clothing, it is presenting yourself in a different manner; making sure you always look your best and proper.

How do you define preppy? Im curious to find out!

Update: Blog Reviews for the Summer!

Wow, I cannot even begin to tell you how weird it is to be writing a blog post after this year. So much has happened! I have wrapped up my first year in college, adjusted to living alone, and enjoyed spending time in the south! I made the decision recently to have a series of blog reviews of my favorite things for the summer and highlight some of my favorite shops. I will be updating the blog soon on the companies I will be featuring.

I want to know, how has your summer been so far and what kind of reviews you would like to see. Since leaving for school my style has matured into a classic prep and I have been obsessed with monograms. I know this blog is all about nail polish but I would like to grow it into the women's blog I see it becoming.

The big news is I decided to change Toesthattwinkle! into The Preppy Student. The name change signals a whole new blog and I cannot wait to start posting!
